The Lazy Circles
“Playing that California sound!"
The Lazy Circles give that old workhorse “Americana” a Hollywood makeover, dressing up traditional sounds with fluffy harmonies, glitzy guitar solos, and a sometimes irreverent sense of humor. This upbeat five-piece can make its joyful noise with both electric and acoustic instruments - whatever works to get the party started.
Everyone thinks Miller Duvall’s from Bakersfield. He’s not - he just hangs out there a bunch because his family has a citrus farm is up that way. His songwriting has probably benefitted from the arrangement. It was this very songwriting that caught the attention of Three Dog Night’s Tim Hutton who decided to produce two of the Circle’s songs at his Laurel Canyon studio. That was a couple years ago. Now, the band is getting their shit together to record a bunch of new material with Mr. Hutton.
Last year, former Sunday school teacher and proud Fresno native Kristal Fields joined the line-up, playing percussion and singing harmony: the Emmylou to Miller’s Graham. She’s been singing some lead recently and has started showing her own unique songs to the band.
Brooklyn born, Georgia grown, guitarist Glenn Harris is the band’s secret weapon, a real lighting in a bottle catcher. He’s the kind of player who draws a crowd at shows because bros want to steal his riffs. You'lll see him playing slide, slack key, and Danelectro 12-string with the Circles.
If bassist Gary Viggers had a nickname, it’d be the “The Professor”. He’s the one that makes sure everyone’s on beat and that Miller’s sometimes fanciful songwriting doesn’t get too crazy. Reportedly, Carol Kaye once said some nice things about him.
Drummer Evan Urkofsky, as the Circle’s de facto arranger, plays the role of the band’s Brian Jones. He has the most to say when Miller introduces a new song to the band - and he usually gets his way. Jello Biafra, referring to his drumming, once said that Evan was "really tight".
